MBA Programs

A Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) is a program that explores all of the major workings of an organization, from strategy formulation to financial planning. It provides an understanding of how management, marketing, accounting, financial aspects, supply-chain management, international relations, competitive markets, and employees all work together to achieve the objectives of a business.

MBA Program Tracks/Concentrations

MBA programs, although at times may seem very similar, can vary greatly depending on the concentration or track that you choose. There are generalized, less specific programs and those that concentrate in areas such as global business, technology, sports management, entrepreneurship, leadership and management, and more. Some programs allow students to choose from a variety of tracks. The best way to get an idea of what tracks a school offers is to look at the program’s curriculum (often found in the course catalog). Your goal should be to select a track that will provide you with the skill sets that you know are necessary to achieve your desired career objectives.

Admission Requirements

The requirements for admission often depend on the location of the school and the type of program. For instance, top programs will have high requirements and programs in locations such as the United Kingdom may require work experience before admission (somewhat of a European cultural norm for MBA education). The most common admission requirements include:

Completed Application
A standard application about yourself.

Proof of Language Skills
For instance, if you are studying in a country that is not your native language, it may be required that you are of a certain level of fluency.

Good Grade-Point Average
Most quality programs require a 3.0 or higher on undergraduate degrees earned or courses at the graduate level from other institutions.

Entrance Exam
For instance the GMAT or GRE is required. Typically schools are looking for a minimum score of 500 (GMAT), however most prefer scores in the 600’s.

Entrance Essay
This is usually written on a topic the school assigns. Most schools ask prospective students to write about their career objectives, etc.

Personal and Professional References
These never hurt to have on your application. Or, even attach a recommendation letter.

Resume
Some schools, especially those that have work experience requirements, ask that prospective students submit a resume.
